Little Venice and Chelsea

LITTLE VENICE LIVING ROOM

My X-frame Ottoman in cream leather, on a beautiful Allegra Hicks kilim; curtains bordered in exotic Indian embroideries; cushions made from Indian sari silks; a chintz-covered sofa with moss fringe; walls plastered with marble dust by an eccentric artist from Lausanne.

CHELSEA KITCHEN

The space of this basement kitchen was broken up awkwardly by two massive freestanding columns, around which I built new units to make them useful instead of obstructive. This one holds wire-suspended shelves of thin acrylic on the back, with a red wall-sculpture of my design on the front.

CHELSEA KITCHEN

My sweet client is an avid Arsenal fan, hence the totemic red shirt. The rather ugly raised fireplace & television combination was already there; I framed it in sectional mirror to give it some lightness and elegance. Note the now-centred beam arrangement.

LITTLE VENICE DRESSING ROOM

I designed the wardrobes with open doors behind which we hung more Indian sari silks. The Moroccan Berber rug was found at the treasure-trove of my father's great friend, antiques dealer Christopher Gibbs.

'LITTLE MAN' IN CHELSEA

A detail of my Little Man on my father's carpet. The brown cushion is my own design from my David Hicks by Ashley Hicks range.

CHELSEA LIVING ROOM

I had a David Hicks textured carpet woven in chocolate brown to anchor the furniture: two deep Louis XVish armchairs with my shagreen-topped Sabre table, a corner mirrored screen a la Syrie Maugham, and an eccentrically-shaped coffee table, two slabs of oak on my Little Man legs in white enamel.

LITTLE VENICE LIBRARY

More exotic cloths (mostly from Joss Graham's gallery) in the small library that I designed off the living room. Two of my Thar armchairs were covered in a silk embroidery of an old Ottoman carnation design (that I had made by school blazer badge embroiderers in Jaipur.) The clients' own Aubusson rug worked well with the black painted floorboards.

CHELSEA HALL TABLE

In this Chelsea hall, I made a shallow bow-fronted console of open oak slats in a Random Ribbon pattern to both screen the radiator and give my clients room for their keys, post and so on.

CHELSEA KITCHEN

An off-centre beam is always unpleasant: I added a second one to make the whole thing centred, with the space between filled with a Random Ribbon pattern of oak strips. The units are in chocolate-stained oak, with my bronze Leaf handles scattered as if falling. At the windows, my David Hicks Fiorentina print.
